Couples match more than chance allows
Two partners answer the same questions apart, on their own phones, without seeing each other. They land on the same answer more often than two people picked at random from the same pool would - and they do it on every single activity we measured.
Is any of it just chance?
We checked every activity separately. 112 of 112 sit above what chance would give, and 110 of them stay above it even after allowing for how many couples answered.
What the comparison is. For every activity we take how often the first person says yes and how often the second one does, then work out how often two people with those habits would agree if they had never met. That is the chance line. Everything above it is the couple.
Where being a couple changes the most
Top line: how often real partners gave the same answer. Bottom line: how often two strangers with the same habits would have. The order also accounts for how much room there was above chance: something almost everyone says yes to cannot rise far.
And where they are closest to strangers
These still sit above chance, only barely. They are the activities where knowing someone tells you the least about what they will answer.
Method
Both partners answer separately, on their own phones, without seeing each other. An answer counts as yes when someone chose gladly or love it; everything else counts as no. For each activity we compare how often the two actually matched with how often they would have matched by chance alone, given how willing each of them is in general. The margin of error comes from how many couples answered that activity. An activity appears only once at least 100 different couples have answered it, and the whole page needs at least 500 couples. Anonymized and aggregated; no answer can be traced to a person or couple.
